I may be a little late to the party on this one, but today I discovered the wonderful podcast Call Your Girlfriend, by Gina Delvac, Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow. Who loves a feminist podcast to get them through their commute? Me!
Today’s episode featured an interview with Virgie Tovar, an author, activist and fierce rallier for female body positivity and against “diet culture.” Virgie speaks pretty much non-stop throughout the interview – you can tell that Ann struggles to get a word in edgeways.
But this is in no way a bad thing – Virgie is great to listen to and her passion and dedication to her cause can be seen not just through what she says, but how she says it.
A favourite part of the podcast is when Virgie describes her fave afternoon ritual when she was four years old: she would take off all my clothes in the bathroom and would run down the hall way naked. She would stop at the mirror and “just jiggle her whole body.” “I remembered the intense pleasure of that feeling,” she muses.
Virgie emphasises that she isn’t trying to back people into a corner and she isn’t saying that everyone should only eat cake and not exercise. She is, however, trying (and succeeding) to provide alternative views and standards of beauty when it comes to female body image.
